Set up a fee

3. Set up a fee

The fee editor opens when you pick a template or click a fee on the Fees page. Set up the fee in the cards on the left, check it in the sidebar on the right, then click Save in the save bar.

At the top of the page:

  • Duplicate copies the fee. Save your changes first.
  • Preview in store opens a product in your store that the fee charges. It uses the saved fee, not unsaved changes.

3.1. Fee details

  • Fee name: shown in the app and in reports. Shoppers see it only when the fee has no line item title. Up to 120 characters.
  • Applies to:
    • Each matching product: charged per item and shown under the product
    • The whole order: charged once per cart, like a service fee

3.2. How shoppers get it

OptionWhat the shopper sees
RequiredThe fee is added automatically when the conditions match
OptionalThe shopper ticks a box to add it
Pick oneThe shopper chooses one of a few options

For an Optional fee, write the Checkbox label as an action, for example Add gift wrapping. The price shows after the label, and the box always starts unticked.

For a Pick one fee:

  1. In Show options as, choose Radio buttons, Dropdown or Buttons.
  2. Add up to 6 options. Give each a name, a Price type (Fixed or Percentage) and a Price.
  3. Keep Let shoppers skip this fee on to add a no-cost choice, selected by default. Change its text in Label for skipping (default No, thanks).
  4. In Charge each option, choose how often each option is charged.

Important: If you turn off Let shoppers skip this fee, shoppers must pick an option. The cheapest one is selected until they choose, and the fee counts as required.

3.3. Price

The Price card shows for Required and Optional fees. Pick one fees set a price on each option instead.

Charge typeHow it works
Fixed amountA set amount in your store currency
PercentageA product fee charges a percentage of the item price before discounts. An order fee charges a percentage of the product subtotal before discounts, without other fees. You can add a Minimum fee and a Maximum fee.
Tiered by subtotalWhole-order fees only. Add up to 10 tiers of Cart subtotal from and Fee. The highest tier the subtotal reaches is charged, and a tier of 0 charges nothing.

In Charge, choose how often the fee is charged:

  • Product fee: Per item (× quantity) or Once per product line
  • Order fee: Once per order or Per matching item

Tick Charge tax on this fee to let Shopify add tax using your tax settings. It is off by default. Check local rules for deposits and government fees, which are often untaxed.

3.4. Conditions

With no conditions, the fee applies to every product or every order. Click Add condition to limit it. You can add up to 20 conditions. With two or more, choose whether all or any of them must be true.

For a product fee, conditions are checked for each product in the cart. Tag matching ignores upper and lower case.

Important: Payment, delivery and shipping address are only known at checkout. A fee with these conditions is added by the Checkout fees block (see Checkout) and needs Shopify Plus. On other plans it is never charged.

3.5. Schedule

  • Always: the fee runs every day
  • Only on certain days: pick the weekdays, from Mon to Sun
  • Between two dates: set a Start date and an optional End date. Leave the end date empty to keep it running.

Days and dates follow your store’s time zone. The fee runs from the start of the start date through the end of the end date.

3.6. Display

  • Line item title: what shoppers see in the cart, at checkout and on their order. Leave it empty to use the line item title from Settings.
  • Explanation for shoppers: why you charge the fee, up to 500 characters. Shoppers see it when they tap the info icon next to the fee, or under the checkbox of an optional fee.

👉 When you start from scratch, the line item title is Untitled fee. Change or clear it when you name your fee.

3.7. Stacking & accounting

  • Exclusive group: fees with the same group name don’t stack, so only one of them is charged. In When several fees in the group apply, choose Charge the highest, Charge the lowest or Charge the first in your fee list.
  • Order tag: added to orders that include this fee, so you can filter them in Shopify admin
  • SKU: set on the fee’s line item for accounting and exports

Fees without a group, or in different groups, all apply together.

3.8. Summary, preview and sample cart

The sidebar helps you check the fee before you save.

  • Summary sets the fee’s Status (Active, Draft or Paused) and explains the fee in plain words: who gets it, the price, the conditions, the schedule, where it shows and whether it is taxed.
  • Preview shows the fee on the Product page, Cart and Checkout of one of your products. It updates as you type. Your theme’s styles change the final look.
  • Try it with a sample cart tests the fee with the same calculation as your store. Choose a Product, Quantity, Country and Customer tag. The result reads Charged, Offered, and charged if chosen, or the reason the fee doesn’t apply.

Note: The preview and the sample cart ignore the fee’s status and date range, so you can test a draft or a fee that starts later.

3.9. Save, duplicate and delete

  1. Click Save in the save bar. If a field needs fixing, the app highlights it and scrolls to it.
  2. To start again, click Discard. A saved fee goes back to its saved values.
  3. To copy the fee, click Duplicate. The copy is named (copy) and starts as Draft.
  4. To delete it, click Delete fee at the bottom of the page, then confirm.

Important: Shoppers stop seeing a deleted fee right away. Orders that already include it keep their fee lines. You can’t undo a delete.
